A transparent QR code that works in your layout
A white square around a QR code can look clumsy on a label, slide or website. A transparent QR code keeps only the dark modules and leaves the rest of the image clear, so the color of your layout shows through. That makes the file much easier to place. It also means your design becomes the QR code's background, and that background needs a little care.

How to create a QR code with a transparent background
- Choose the content type and enter the URL or information you want to encode.
- Leave Transparent background selected. The checkerboard in the preview shows the clear pixels; it will not appear in your download.
- Set the foreground color, size and quiet zone. Black is the safest starting point.
- Scan the preview, then download the QR code as a transparent PNG or SVG. Test the exported file again after placing it in the final design.

If you want a QR code without background padding, move the quiet-zone control to No padding. Only do that when your layout already leaves a clear margin around the code.
Transparency removes the white box, not the need for contrast
Scanners have to distinguish the dark QR modules from the area behind them. Place a black or dark QR code on a plain, light surface. A photograph, gradient, patterned paper or dark box can show through a transparent PNG and break up the pattern. In that case, add a solid light panel beneath the code or switch off transparency and choose a suitable background color.
Packaging needs extra attention. Glossy material can reflect light, and transparent labels may reveal whatever sits behind the bottle or jar. GS1's printing guidance recommends strong contrast, dark symbols on light backgrounds and a quiet area free of decoration. Print a proof at its real size and scan it under the lighting where customers will use it.
Transparent PNG or SVG: which file should you download?
Choose PNG when you need a transparent QR code for a website, presentation, document or an app that expects a raster image. The size control sets the pixel dimensions of the download. Export it at the largest size you expect to use; enlarging a small PNG later can soften its edges.
SVG is a vector file. It stays sharp when a designer scales it for a business card, poster, menu or product label, and its background can stay transparent too. For most print work, SVG is the safer handoff. PNG remains handy when a template or publishing system does not accept SVG files.

Logos, colors and error correction
A center logo covers part of the QR pattern. Upload the logo, keep it modest and use error correction level H. Higher error correction adds more backup data, but it does not make an oversized logo safe. DENSO WAVE lists four levels: L, M, Q and H. More correction also creates a denser code for the same content.
Rounded modules and dots can suit a brand style, though plain squares give scanners the pattern they expect. Keep the three large corner markers easy to recognize. After changing shape, color or logo size, scan from more than one phone and from the distance you expect in use.
